Bohemian French Braid Twisted Bun

I recorded this hair tutorial about a year ago and have finally managed to upload it onto my blog.

Its a messy braided bun look where you start with one bohemian braid on one side of your head and keep adding to it as you go around and collecting all your hair. Then once all the hair is braided up, loosen the braid up and then pin up the braid into a bun.

Rubi Shoes

Shoes are my own guilty pleasure. I own over a hundred pairs of shoes and am emotionally attached to every one of them. When Rubi Shoes approached me to feature their next and upcoming line of “Sock Boots” on my blog, I was quite excited. Having worn many of the Rubi Shoe brands in my teenage years, I knew how fun and stylish these pieces would be.

Having the perfect pair of shoes, for me, is the most important part of an outfit. It’s the essential finishing touch that pulls the whole look together. Sometimes, as long as your shoes are on point, you can even get away with some basic clothes.

How to – Soft beach waves

IMG_6086.jpgYou know those days when you have that perfect wavy hair and it makes life that much sweeter? Yes, I do too. And below I have compiled a short instruction how to achieve this very easy look!

WHAT YOU NEED

IMG_6130.jpg

STEP 1

The most important step for this look is to have “gritty” hair. You need some matter in your hair to actually make the waves stay in. I’ve got quite dry and silky hair so in order to get this look, I hadn’t washed my hair for four days ( gross, I know..). Some people like to spray their hair with hair spray prior to curling which helps your hair to get gritty as well.

STEP 2

Section your hair. I normally do a half up and half down so that I can work on both sides of my hair equally.

STEP 3

Grab about 1.5 to 2 inches worth of hair and clamp the area closest to the roots between the heated plates. ( If you aren’t using a ghd and have a straightener with controlled temperature, then 180 degrees would do the trick).

Twirl the whole hair straightener towards the back of your head once and then glide the hair straighter down the length of the strand. Have you ever curled a piece of ribbon with scissors? This works a lot similar to that where you don’t need to keep twirling the hair straightener, only one twirl at the beginning would do the job.

Once you are at the end of the strand, unclamp the hair straighter and you would see a soft wave/curl. Hair spray this straight away so that it holds it’s shape.

STEP 4

Repeat this step through out your whole head. Because this look is meant to be more “softer” I normally leave some strands straight and curl in between these. Or sometimes I start the twirl mid-strand so only the bottom of the hair is curled. It is completely up to you on how many curls you would like to get in.

STEP 5

My fringe is quite long at the moment, so rather than curling my whole fringe, I grab the strands between the plates and glide it down the fringe ( as how you would do when normally straightening your hair) but when reaching the bottom, turn the hair straightener towards the back of your head. What this would do is blend your fringe into the waves at the back of your head, rather than having really strong curls around your face.

STEP 6

After all my hair is curled, I normally give is another round of hair spray and then run my fingers through my hair and untangle some of the curls. This just adds extra volume to the hair.

These are 6 very easy steps to get the look. I can normally get this done in about 10 minutes with my long hair. The trick to this style is the condition of your hair when you are curling. Unfortunately, clean and silky hair won’t be able to hold the curls in at all and you will eventually find that you having to go over the same strand a few times to make it stay.  Having 3-4 days between washes for your hair is about the right condition for having curls to hold in. If your hair is quite greasy then you are best to make that judgement call on your own. This style definitely takes a few attempts to nail down; remember, practice makes perfect!

Daily Skin Care Routine.

Hey guys!

A proper daily beauty routine is quite essential to getting your skin ready for a busy day. So in this blog post I will be talking about some of the products that I include in my daily skin care routine.

Having problematic skin, I have to be really careful with what I actually put on my face. It can’t be too oily and cannot have intense chemicals. Suns screen HAS to be part of your skin care routine, especially as you get older. A lot of pigmentation is caused by sun damage and sun can also accelerate skin ageing. My skin is super sensitive so I tried to opt for something that has more of a “herbal” basis rather than lots and lots of harmful chemicals. I came across an Indian brand which was stocked up at my local beauty salon “Sisters”. The brand is called “VLCC Natural Sciences”. As the name suggests, this brand claims to use natural and herbal remedies in their skin care products therefore with less side effects. At first it was very hard to believe, so I only went with their eye care- now I have their whole collection of skin care products and I will talk you through each product below <3

Eye Care:

img_5164

A lot of us forget about looking after our under eye area or the corners of our eyes, but these areas are the areas that normally get the most affected due to stress and age. Try to include an under eye cream in your skin routine daily to reduce the chances of getting wrinkles around your eyes or dark circles under your eyes. There are lots of options out there from serums to creams and prices range equivalently. If you are still young and don’t have bad dark circles or wrinkles then you can get away with using an average priced under eye cream but if the dark circles are quite prominent then professional advice could be useful.

I use “Almond Under eye cream” from VLCC. I don’t really have dark under eye circles but when I started to notice signs of it about a year ago, I got this cream to try it out and so far it has worked wonders. The mixture isn’t oily and gets absorbed into the skin quite instantly. I like to put it around my eyes, nose and lips ( to help reduce the signs of wrinkles).

Almond contains fatty acids that helps nourish skin and hydrate it which gets rids of puffiness around the area. Almond also has a natural bleaching agent which helps get rid of pigmentation. The mixture also contains Wheat Germ. Wheat Germ is heavy in Vitamin E, has antioxidant properties, has polyunsaturated fatty acids which help with the signs of ageing. You will start to see the difference within two months of using the product. I would recommend using the product morning and night for best results.

Day Cream:

img_5172

After using the VLCC eye cream and being heavily satisfied with it, I decided to try out the face cream range from VLCC. They have two ranges ; “De-pigmentation” and “Skin Whitening”. Having a lot of pigmentation due to acne scars, I decided to go for the “De-pigmentation” range. A good thing about this day cream is that it comes with SPH 25, so you are getting protection from the sun within your normal day cream.

The texture of this cream is quite similar to the eye cream- non greasy and fast absorbent. I can usually put my foundation on straight after putting the cream on. Main ingredients in the day cream is Mulberry and Turmeric. Mulberry extract contains potent antioxidants that fight signs of skin ageing as it repairs skin radicals. I have talked about the benefits of turmeric with acne in my earlier posts, it contains anti bacterial and antiseptic properties which are quite beneficial for skin health.

Since I have started using this, within one year my scars have definitely lightened and I haven’t had any further acne problems (and I am off my acne pills YAY!). The only thing with this cream being of a herbal base is that as time goes, the cream will get a yellow hue but that is only due to the natural extracts used. Depending on how dark the pigmentation is, or how dark your acne scars are, it would take a while for the results to show; I saw proper results after continuous use for one year.

Night Cream:

img_5177

Our skin repairs it self the most during night time while we are asleep. So it is the best time to give our skin the ingredients it needs to boost it’s process of repairing. From the VLCC “De-Pigmentation” range, the night cream with Sandalwood and Aloe Vera works a charm. Sandalwood (along with turmeric) is an old Indian remedy favourite for skin care, ask any Indian lady for home remedies and these two will be the staple ingredients. Sandalwood has amazing properties such as anti-inflammatory agent which boosts the circulation of blood in the skin (helping skin repair it self over night). Aloe Vera contains beta carotene, Vitamin C and E that help skin start hydrated and firm.

The cream texture is nice and cooling. Once applied your skin feels supple and hydrated. Like its sister products, this is non-greasy and fast absorbing.

It is quite difficult to find a range that really works well with sensitive and oily skin. But VLCC is definitely a brand that I have tried, tested and it has given me some really good results. In terms of finding this brand, I only know of “Sisters” beauty parlour in New Lynn Mall that stocks this, though I am sure you can order these online as well 🙂

Hope my little routine gives you ladies some ideas on skin care or what to use next <3

Three easy but sassy looks for Valentines

With Valentines Day just a week away, I thought I would put together my 3 looks for your Valentine’s date <3

LOOK #1

Floral, Lace and Sass

img_4989
Cape : Mirrou
img_4990
Shoes : Novo
img_4992
Handbag: Farmers

img_5883

This is my fave look out of the three, so for obvious reasons, I will talk about it first  😛

Floral and Lace <3 . The best two combinations that a girl can put together on an outfit; they practically complete each other! And what better way to woo your Valentine in one of your best floral number.

This is the floral look in particular that I chose to put together for the post. If you read waaaaaayy back to a blog post I made about a year ago, I LOVE capes! I think capes add a very glamorous touch to any simple outfit. Throw on a nice floral cape with lace hemming on a nude coloured dress and you have yourself a very flirty Valentine’s lunch outfit!

  • Hair
    • Pull your hair up in a low messy bun; pull some loose strands around your face to soften the look. This will take away from the bagginess of the cape and outfit.
  • Makeup
    • This being a day time outfit, it is nicer to compliment the lighter shades of the outfit with just Foundation, Concealer and Bronzer. Give yourself  winged eyes and smack on some “Cheerleader” HUDA Liquid Matte Gloss and you are good to go!
    • ( If you read my latest travel post to Sydney, you will see how CRAZY I went with shopping for make up and the “HUDA beauty liquid matte glosses” is my new fav thing! I will be making a post on how much I love them very soon! If you haven’t had a chance to read my blog post, here is the link => A Shopper’s guide to three days in Sydney)
  • Fragrance
    • Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream will add the finishing touch to your floral get up <3

LOOK #2

A Sweet and Simple Look

img_5028
Skirt : Glassons
img_5029
Cardigan : Forever New

img_5884

Nothing can beat a simple black and white duo. Grab a white tank top, tuck it in a black pencil midi length skirt and pair it with a grey cardigan. This look can’t be limited to one time of the day. You can rock this for an early morning breakfast date, a luncheon or even at the dinner table <3

  • Hair
    • A side bohemian braid on straight hair will do the perfect trick to add a little glam to your black and white combo
  • Makeup
    • Switch up the “Cheerleader HUDA liquid matte gloss” with something a little bold; having a simple outfit allows you to get away with some dark lips
      • Step 1 : Line and fill in your lips with “HUDA lip contour – Famous”
      • Step 2 : Go over with “HUDA liquid matte – Material Girl”
  • Fragrance
    • Marc Jacobs Decadence has an amazing spicy floral smell to it <3

LOOK #3

Rock your Playsuit

img_5006
Playsuit : Dotti
img_5013
Blazer : Chiffon Boutique

img_5885

Playsuits are great; it gives you the feel of wearing a dress, but without the fear of them flying up in the wind ;p

Pair floral or colourful playsuit up with a black blazer, and you will be looking fashionably classy at your dinner date.

  • Hair
    • Having your hair out will take away from the staunclook of the blazer- your choice if you would like it straight or in waves
  • Makeup
    • Being a night time look, you can go heavy on your contouring by using a cream contour palette ( in this case I used my new fav ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS contour palette) underneath a powder bronzer.
    • I went back to using “Cheerleader HUDA liquid matte” for softer lip colour
  • Fragrance
    • I usually save my Ted Baker Langley perfume for my special nights out. It has a very strong spicy musk smell that I absolutely love which can be a bit heavy for day time wear.

Well there you have it! My three favourite looks for Valentines 2017. I hope these spark some great ideas for your dates!

Please let me know what you thought of the outfit ideas and what ideas of your own you have come up with!

A Shopper’s guide to three days in Sydney

Whenever you are given a chance a to travel, never say no! So when I got given the chance to attend a wedding in Sydney, I couldn’t say no at all. But straight after coming from my VERY extended holiday in Fiji, the Sydney trip was cut down to 5 days. In 5 days, with the wedding taking one day and travelling taking about a day (give or take),I really just had 3 days to “travel”.

I strategically decided that I would spend my 3 days SHOPPING and EATING. Here is a run down of where to shop and where to eat from my point of view.

SHOPPING

World Square

World Square can be described as an “outdoor mall”. Some of the stores that I was able to check out were

  • Nine West
  • Calvin Klein
  • Cue
  • Forever New
  • Superdry
  • L’occitane en Provence
  • Kagui

My favourite store was Kagui for sure! This is a shoe shop with the most adorable collection of shoes.

img_4926

A pair of sandals with wedge heels that I bought at Kagui.

Westfield Pitt Street

Going from New Zealand where our Westfield’s are only two stories tall and a single building, you could say I was in shock when I saw how big this mall actually was. I visited this mall about three times but still had not managed to see all the stores located in there. These were the collection of main stores that I was able to have a look at, but there were also many other  boutique stores which were located around the mall area.

  • Sephora
  • Zara
  • David Jones
  • Prada
  • Gucci

DFO Homebush

If I had to compare DFO to something in New Zealand, I would compare it to our Dressmart. DFO was a bigger and better Dressmart with outlet stores for more luxury brands. Some of the stores that I quite liked were:

  • Ted Baker
  • Armani
  • Michael Kors
  • Oroton
  • Portmans
  • Forever New
  • Windsor Smith

This is definitely something worthwhile to check out, especially if you would like to snag a bargain on luxury brands.

Duty Free Sydney Airport

My flight got delayed by 2 hours on the way back home, so you can guess what I did in those couple of hours in the airport. You can find anything from Urban Decay, Mac, Channel, Nars, Bobby Brown and other make up stations to Oroton, Tiffany, Fendi and so many more stores in the airport; I was  hoping my flight got delayed by a few more hours!

FOOD

I found the food sold in the food lane in World Square to be simply amazing! I made sure to eat as many Pie Face’s, Sushi’s and Ramen noodle soup that I could! The food quality and the different varieties of cuisines available was worth commending.

Some of the restaurants that we did manage to check out were:

  • Basket Brothers:
    • This breakfast and lunch hub has the most delicious chai latte and “to-die-for” scrambled eggs on toast.
img_5372
Eyeing the best breakfast out
img_5376
mmmmmmm…….
  • Guylian
    • Need I say more???
img_5427
I will just leave this here…..
  • Green Peppercorn
    • Nothing beats Thai food, so naturally, Thai food had to be done in Sydney. When a local suggested Green Peppercorn to me; I was in there within 10 minutes!
img_5400
I will let this photo do all the talking
img_4640
Ever tried your rum in a pineapple???
SIGHT SEEING

I managed to squeeze in half a days worth of sight seeing into this short trip. I did the essential rounds of the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and St. Mary’s Cathedral. Staying in the city meant that these were just a train ride and walk away.

img_4644img_4646img_4692img_4697img_4710img_4765img_4738

  • St Mary’s Cathedral

One thing that really left me in awe was the interior of St Mary’s Cathedral. The design of the church was beyond breath taking and upon entering you felt a sense of calm and peacefulness. I tried to capture a few of the beautiful architecture of the church but obviously there is nothing like being there yourself to experience it’s beauty.

img_4810img_4789img_4795

TRANSPORTATION

For most of the days used the train links and bus routes to get to and from places. And on some occasions we had a car. I would for sure choose to get around by public transportation than trying to navigate myself around Sydney battling traffic. I found that the GPS is somethings as good as nothing when you have entered a tunnel or are on the spaghetti junctions because your GPS can’t locate your own point!

So there you have it! My short trip to Sydney summed in this little blog post. I hope this gives you an idea of some of the things to do in Sydney if you are planning to go. And if you are a shopaholic and foodie like myself, then I definitely hope this post helps you out in Sydney!

DIY : COLORED RICE

If there is an event coming up that you are hosting, it is always a nice idea to get creative with your decorations, and where possible get more hands on and create something yourself!. In this blog post I will be sharing a simple DIY trick with rice and food color to create a vibrant decoration.

Colored Rice :

  • 1 cup of rice for each color(the cheapest that you could find ; I found 1kg rice for $2 at Pak ‘n’ Save)
  • food coloring (which ever color you want your rice to be)
  • 1/2 tsp of white vinegar for each color
  • zip lock sandwich bags
  • a tray to dry your rice
  1. Add a few drops of food coloring to the vinegar and mix it together
  2. Place the cup of rice in the zip lock bag
  3. Add vinegar color mix to the rice
  4. Zip up the bag of rice and shake the bag until all the rice is colored
  5. Tip it out onto the tray and leave it overnight to dry

Ways to use colored rice for Deco:

Colored rice can be stuck onto cut pieces of shaped card board and used as centre pieces for tables. Or it can be used loose as table decorations or floor decorations. Here are some pictures of how I used my colored rice.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This is a fun and easy task, you can always get kids involved in this as well. The best thing is that the rice doesn’t have to go to waste. You can always pack them away into separate ziplock bags and re-use them for another event!

Travel Diaries (New Plymouth)

Graduating in 2014 and having a gap year before I scored a job, left me with a lot of time on my hands. So I decided to fill this time with dance, music and of course as much travel as I could. Making an escape down to New Plymouth was one of my favorites, it meant I could get away from the hustle and bustle of Auckland.

New Plymouth, to me, is like Auckland, but on a smaller scale. It isn’t a small town like what many people perceive it to be (and sadly that included me). It is a developing town with a lot to offer from great fashion boutique stores, to even better restaurants, but because everything is in such close proximity, you can manage to squeeze in breakfast, shopping, a swim, a trip to the mineral pools, lunch and dinner into one day ( just like I did!).

Once in New Plymouth these are just some of the few things that you can do ;

  • Taranaki Mineral Pools
    • There are spa pools which have warm mineral water continuously pumping through. This comes straight from rainfall in Mount Taranaki. Having a soak in the alkaline antioxidant water is believed to help balance acidity in the body, which in turn would help decrease the acceleration of  body aging.
    • There are private and public spa pools to choose from as well.
    • Below is the link for the webpage of the Mineral Pool.

http://www.pureone.co.nz/

  • Govett-Brewster Art Gallery.  IMG_4775

Unfortunately the day that I did go to the museum, part of it was closed down for maintenance. So all I was able to see was the moving arts, which was quite neat in it self.

IMG_4753

  • Seaside Market on Ocean View Parade
    • The market happens every first Sunday of the month and it is one of the biggest events for the community. Local traders, farmers, artists, creators come together and set up their stslls to sell hand made items. You can get anything from coasters to candles, wall hangings, fresh vegetables and fruits, kitchen sauces and chutney’s, crystals and what not.
    • IMG_7002
Coasters that I purchased at one of the stalls at the market. Hand made by a lovely lady using tiles and decorating paper finishing the coaster off with resin.
      IMG_7003
A gift pack of hand made soy candles by Serene Naturals. They are in three scents; Coconut Lime, Lemongrass and French Pear

    • The market not only has sale stalls, they also have a wide range of food trucks parked on one side. The wood fired pizza and quesadillas are for sure one of the best that I have tasted. Along with the food stalls they have entertainment available. I was lucky enough to get a chance to meet the “Bubble Man” of New Plymouth and create some of my own giant bubbles!IMG_2014

  • Paritutu Rock
    • If you want to get one with nature and get some exercise done, this rock climb is for sure something to do!
    • The climb starts of with wooden stairs at the bottom but as the rock gets steeper the stairs disappear and the only support you have are chains on poles, which are stuck into ground. To my horror some of the poles were very unstable but it seemed to not matter to the other climbers who zoomed right past and climbed the rock. I, of course, couldn’t give in so biting down my terrified cries I climbed the rock after them.
    • This is a climb that you will have to go fully prepared for, with comfortable work- out attire. You need not be like me, who turned up to do the climb just in my flip flops. Yes, I regretted my decision when I saw the stairs end and the rock climb get steeper.

  • Oakura River and Corbett Park Beach
    • This is a little pool of river that joins out into the ocean. The river is perfect for families and people who want a lazy dip on a hot summer’s day. I had a great time floating around in my giant donut!IMG_6774

I purchased this giant donut from The Ponsonby Pony Club. It is the perfect item for your summer and beach days! Link is below!

Places to eat!

  • Gusto Restaurant
    • I cannot deny my love for squid, obviously I had to eat squid on my trip to New Plymouth, so I set my brother and partner out on a mission to find me a place that sells some good squid! And here they found the Gusto Restaurant! Situated on the wharf with a pretty view and tables out on the deck. Food prices are reasonable with lovely staff. Needless to say; the squid was mind blowing!
  • Radio Malabar
    • A South Indian cuisine. My inner Indian tends to get homesick on trips away, so I just had to make a visit to Radio Malabar! They have the amazing dosa’s and sambaars with one of the best cardonam ice creams that I have ever tasted!
  • Salt
    • This is a restaurant you can afford to avoid. It is over priced with very bland and average food. If you are a vegetarian then, sadly, there is not many options for you other than fries, which weren’t that well done either.
  • Deluxe Diner
    • If you are into your American style dining, then this is the place to be! Stepping into the restaurant you will be transported back in time, with a very themed setting for the restaurant. Their serving size is massive; one dish and two little girls like me can make a meal out of it!
  • Manous Seaside Restaurant
    • They are situated on the wharf as well. Their theme is quite rustic looking and it is quite easy to drive past mistake it for a wrecked boat shed. But their food is very good, especially their seafood baskets.
  • Petit Paris
    • This is by far my favorite eat out in New Plymouth. It is a small little cafe in the city which sells amazing French mocha and hot French croissants and chocolate danishes which are baked fresh each morning. This is the ideal place to go for a nice romantic breakfast date, catch up with your girls or just to have the best dam french coffee and croissants on your lonesome. IMG_4744
